The quiz tool can be used for more than just quizzes. Using the Quiz for exams such as midterms and finals are more obvious uses of the Quiz tool. Less obvious uses include knowledge checks, guided review sheets, and mini-lessons—which are all more formative exercises that leverage the organization and auto grading capabilities of the quiz to help students engage with and learn important concepts.

Creating quizzes is a two-step process:

Part 1 involves creating the quiz item and customizing basic settings.

Part 2 is when we add the questions to the quiz.

Part 1 – Creating and Customizing a Quiz

Step 1: Creating a Quiz

  1. Turn on Edit Mode, which is a toggle located on the top right of your main course page.
  2. Locate the module in which you want to add the label.
  3. Click on Add an activity or resource
  4. This will bring up a list of all the items you can add to your course.
  5. Select the Activities tab at the top of this pop-out.
  6. ****Select Quiz.

Step 2: Setting up the Quiz

  1. In the box called Name, enter the name of the quiz here.

  2. In the box called Description, type in the instructions for the assignment.

  3. For the small box called “Display description on course page”, leave that box unchecked.

    Timing

Click Enable to activate all the timing setting:

    1. “Open the Quiz”: This determines when the quiz will first become visible to students. They will be able to see the quiz, but they will not be able to take the quiz.
    2. “Close the quiz”: This determines when the quiz automatically closes. At this time, students will no longer have access to the quiz.
    3. “Time Limit: This determines the maximum length of time the students will have to complete the quiz.
    4. “When time expires”: we should set Open attempts are submitted automatically to prevent any submissions left open.

    Grade

The most important setting is Attempts allowed. This allows you to limit the number of times a student can retake a quiz.
